A 31-year-old mother of nine children was arrested early Wednesday after one of her children was found brain dead in his room by a family member, according to WKMG-TV in Orlando.
Roman Peterson, 6, was found unconscious and in critical condition with a head injury by his aunt Monday night inside an apartment at The Grand Reserve apartments in Orlando. The boy's mother, Andrienne Wilkerson, could not be found.
After a 12-hour search, police found Wilkerson at a nearby apartment at the complex.
Late Tuesday, the boy's condition deteriorated at Orlando Regional Medical Center and he was pronounced brain dead.
It was not reported how the child injured his head or if Wilkerson was responsible.
"(Wilkerson) was charged with child abuse and child neglect and charges are stemming from an incident prior to what was being investigated today," Orlando police Detective Patrick Schneider said. "At this point, the investigation into the child's death is still ongoing."
New charges may be filed against Wilkerson Wednesday afternoon in connection with the boy's head injury, Local 6 News reported.
It was not known if the child's father was contacted.
Wilkerson's remaining children are in Department of Children and Families custody.
