7-year-old grazed by bullet fired into Westside home

Mother: Child is recovering after release from UF Health

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – A 7-year-old boy grazed by a bullet early Sunday morning has been released from the hospital and is recovering at home. At the same time Jacksonville police are searching for whoever fired shots into a home on Mc Quade Street, just off Beaver Street.

Police were called just after 6:30 a.m. because someone was shooting in the street. Several of those shots hit a home.

The Child's uncle, Darrell Love, said he woke up to the sound of gunshots.

"It was about 5:45 in the morning. Next thing you know, I heard three or four gunshots and rubble from the ceiling started to fall down and glass was everywhere," Love said.

Shortly after hearing the shots, Love said he heard his nephew screaming.

“I ended up lifting up his shirt, and I seen he had gotten scraped by a bullet,” Love said. “He’s doing fine now, but it was pretty massive, about the size of some lips. He was just bleeding real bad.”

The child was driven to the hospital by his guardian.

News4Jax crime and safety analyst Gil Smith said the incident reminds him of an old case.

"This reminds me of the DreShawna Davis case from 2006 when she was in the house when shots were fired," Smith said. "She actually put her body on top of her relatives to protect them, and it really rocked the entire city back then. It was a very emotional time when that happened and we just hope people learn from those situations."

Officers are going around the neighborhood talking to people who might have witnessed something.

Anyone with any information is asked to call Crime Stoppers at 866-845-TIPS.
