Police said the shooting occurred just after midnight during an argument over money in the 2500 block of Lowell Avenue.
A neighbor heard gunshots and called 911. Mary Back was pronounced dead at the scene by rescue personnel.
Police said another woman in the home witnessed the shooting and picked John Clark Smith Jr., 76, out of a photo lineup.
Police said Smith and Back were drinking and began arguing.
Back is survived by two children. Her family is in shock not only that she's gone, but that her live could be taken by a family member.
"That's what's so shocking," said Wesley Hickman, Back's nephew. "It's like my mom said: 'What's this world coming to when your own family kills you.'"
Smith was charged with murder and booked into the Duval County jail. Police said he is not stranger to the jail, having several previous arrests, including one last year for aggravated assault with a deadly weapon.
