8-month-old near death; parents charged
Parents in jail as baby remains on life support
As an 8-month-old boy that police say was suffocated by his mother remains on life support, his parents are in jail.
Homicide investigators were called to Wolfson Children's Hospital on Tuesday morning when doctors said the baby's brain injuries were caused under suspicious circumstances.
According to the arrest report, the boys' 21-year-old mother, Cherale Jones, admitted to lying the child face down on a blanket surrounded by couch cushions for five to 10 minutes on Jan. 27, causing the baby to go unconscious.
She said she did it due to stress because the baby was crying and because of the things she was going through with her mother, according to the report.
While Cherale Jones said she revived the baby using CPR, she admitted to waiting 12 to 15 hours to take the child to Orange Park Medical Center.
The baby was transferred to Wolfson the next day, where doctors say there is brain-stem damage and the child is not expected to survive without a respirator.
ARREST REPORTS: Cherale Jones and Kareem Jones
Police said Kareen Jones, 23, admitted to being present when his wife suffocated the baby and watched as she revived the boy, saying he should have taken the victim to the hospital.
Charale Jones is charged with child abuse and child neglect causing great bodily harm. Kareem Jones, who is listed as a Navy employee, is charged with child neglect causing great bodily harm.
Charges are likely to be upgraded if the child dies.
"We are investigating this case, and it's deeply disturbing on many levels," said John Harrell, a spokesman for the Department of Children and Families. "You know, children depend on their parents to protect them from harm. When you hear about something like this, a parent taking out their own stress on a child, then delaying reporting that abuse for many hours, it's so heartbreaking."
The Navy said it has a mutual aid agreement with the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office and other law enforcement agencies on criminal investigations. That agreement calls for the prosecution to be immediately handled by civil authorities.
