TALLAHASSEE, Fla. -- Members of a state legislative committee put together a plan Friday that removes all funding for boot camps next year.Lawmakers want to take the money that is currently being spent and move it into a new program for juveniles that is based on the highly regarded boot camps in Martin and Polk counties. Those programs shun the use of yelling and shouting at juveniles and emphasize more counseling.
Members of the House Criminal Justice Appropriations Committee are proposing more cash for the revised juvenile programs next year. They want to boost funding from $8 million to $10.6 million. The proposal still has a long way to go through the legislative process.Florida currently operates four juvenile boot camps. The proposed changes were set off by the death of a 14-year-old boy at a Panhandle boot camp after he was set upon by guards.
