JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- A Coast Guard cutter found and rescued a St. Augustine sailor Sunday morning after he spent the night at sea after his 38-foot catamaran was capsized by a waterspout.
Scott Watts was sailing from Jacksonville to St. Augustine Saturday evening when he encountered heavy weather. After Watts' wife reported him missing at midnight, the Coast Guard launched the patrol boat Kingfisher from Mayport, along with a helicopter from Savannah and a C-130 fixed-wing aircraft from Clearwater.
The crew of the Kingfisher found Watts on top of his capsized boat waving his arms about 8:40 a.m. He was about 4 miles southeast of the mouth of the St. Johns River.
"It's very rewarding to find and rescue someone so we can bring him back to their family," said Kingfisher commanding officer, Lt. j.g. Matthew Baker. "This is why many of us joined the Coast Guard, to save lives."
Watts was picked up and taken back to Mayport, where a rescue crew and family were waiting.
The Coast Guard reported that Watts was in fair condition.
