WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. -- A man who allegedly set his girlfriend on fire as she worked at a gas station died while being treated for burns at the Palm Beach County jail infirmary, authorities said Sunday.
Charles "Lester" Parson, 49, had been held at the jail since Wednesday after being transferred from a Miami hospital, according to the sheriff's office. He was charged with attempted murder and arson.
Parson lost consciousness in the infirmary Saturday afternoon while being helped to the bathroom by two nurses, and was later pronounced dead at an Atlantis hospital, sheriff's spokeswoman Teri Barbera told The Palm Beach Post.
An autopsy will be performed to determine a cause of death, and the sheriff's office was investigating, Barbera said.
A surveillance video captured the April 4 attack in Riviera Beach. The video showed a man walking into the store with a gasoline container, locking the door behind him, pouring gas on Tanya Hughey and splashing around the store before lighting a match, police said.
"She said something, and I snapped," Parson told authorities, according to a police report.
Hughey was burned over 90 percent of her body and remained hospitalized in critical condition Sunday in Miami, authorities said.
