FLAGLER COUNTY, Fla. – Saturday was supposed to be a day of fun at Grandma's house for 2-year-old Kelisa Bailey and her 8-year-old cousin.
When the cousins were swimming, the phone rang and their grandmother, Alicia Fennell, went inside.
Fennell told Channel 4 that is when tragedy struck: Kelisa had fallen into the pool. Fennell said it happened in a split second.
"She wasn't responding. She was swollen up, her tongue was hanging out of her mouth, she was actually gone," said Fennell. "Making that call, I just really can't explain what I was feeling. It was too much. Thank God I'm here today to tell the story because had something happened, I would probably be in a nuthouse."
Kelisa's cousin was able to pull her out of the pool and Fennell quickly dialed 911.
"OK, is the baby out of the pool?" 911 operator Genice Caccavale asked.
"Yes, she's out of the pool, she's out of the pool," said Fennell.
Caccavale then told Fennell how to perform CPR on her 2-year-old granddaughter.
"Roll her to the side and clean out her mouth," said Caccavale. "Pinch her nose and with the other hand lift her chin and tilt her head back."
After a few more minutes on the phone, the girl started breathing and help had arrived.
Fennell and Caccavale had a chance to meet on Tuesday, and thank each other for the team work that saved Kelisa's life.
"She's just as much a hero as I am that she was able to listen and stay calm enough to act the way she did about the situation that was at hand," said Caccavale. "A lot of people can't do that so I thinks he's pretty amazing myself."
"It kind of made me feel she was feeling my pain and that is why she was able to keep me calm and relaxed," said Fennell. "She just did an amazing job."
Kelisa was transported to Wolfson Children's Hospital in Jacksonville, where she was kept overnight for observation.
