Protesters Greet School Board On Meeting Day

Deadline For One Contractor; Radcliffe To Apologize

POSTED: 9:18 a.m. EDT August 21, 2001

Carrying signs reading "Prove Drivers Are Legal" and "Our Students Deserve Safe and Timely Transportation," a small group of protesters have gathered outside the Duval County School Board this morning.

School board protestorsThe six protesters were organized by Stacie Waddell, a frustrated parent. She tells Channel 4 that no bus came for her daughter the first week of school, and the bus was late every day the second week.

The protesters also raised concerns about the legal status of the First Student and Atlantic Drivers.

Waddell says that if contractors can't get their kids to school, the board should take away routes.

And that's on the agenda of the school board's meeting, scheduled to begin at 6 p.m.

Last week the school board gave F.L. Gelaro until today to make sure they have enough drivers to cover all their routes, or the board may give the routes to other contractors.

First Student said last week that all their routes were covered.

Also at tonight's meeting, Duval schools' General Services Director John Radcliffe is expected to read a letter of apology to board member Gwen Gibson over a insulting comment he was overheard making about her after storming out of a previous meeting.

Duval school superintendent John Fryer has suspended Radcliffe for one month without pay, but some members of the board and the Jacksonville NAACP wanted the administrator fired.
