Police Find Puppies Near Death In Hot Car, Woman Arrested

POSTED: Friday, May 26, 2006

A Keystone Heights woman was arrested on animal cruelty charges after police said she left three puppies locked inside a car that heated up to over 100 degrees.

An officer saw the puppies in the car and called for an animal control officer. When they could not locate the owner, the officer jimmied the door open to get them out, but it was too late.

The puppies were unresponsive and near death. They were later euthanized.

According to police, one window of the car was cracked a few inches, but it wasn't enough to keep the puppies from suffering.

"It's a cruel way to die, to suffer from dehydration and heat stroke, and that's essentially what happened," said Angela Vigil with Jacksonville Animal Care and Control

Kimberly Gilio told police she left the puppies inside the car while watching her son play baseball at a Murray Hill park.

"People need to realize they cannot leave their animals or children in the car even for 10 minutes when they're running an errand," Vigil said. "It gets too hot, too fast."

Gilio was charged with animal cruelty.
