MIDDLEBURG, Fla. -- Historians are upset after they said a developer began clearing property that contains a centuries-old cemetery in Middleburg.
Members of the Clay County Historical Commission said bulldozers went through the property, scattering markers and tearing down trees.
"It's a military cemetery. There are marines and Army personnel here from the second Seminole war -- the 1830s and 40s," said " Dr. Cynthia Waddell. "There are at least two slaves buried here. There's at least one Native American buried here. Plus, the ancestors of local families."
The historical commission told
the local station's Emily Pantelides it has negotiated with the developers to buy the land so they can preserve it.
The group has filed a stop-work order to get the bulldozers off the property.
Calls to the developer on Sunday were not returned.
