NASSAUVILLE, Fla. -- About 60 homes in Nassau County were evacuated Tuesday afternoon because of a brush fire near state Road 107 near the Nassauville.
"The homes are right into the wood-line itself," Nassau County Fire Chief Chuck Cooper said. "We're asking folks in this area to cooperate with us and be willing to move when we ask them to."
The fire, which burned 25 acres, came within a few feet of homes, damaged no structures and flames were about 60 feet high.
"The fire truck put himself between my house and the woods and saved my house" said Hubert Webber. "I was was within at least a minute of losing it."
Resident Amelia Lewis said she didn't even know about the fire until firefighters knocked on her door.
"We opened up the door and smelled the smoke," Lewis said.
State Forestry crews joined Nassau County firefighters in an effort that contained 50 percent of the fire by 6 p.m. Bulldozers at the site and a helicopter sent to drop water from above the fire completely contained by 10 p.m. and residents were allowed to return.
The Red Cross hat opened a shelter for evacuees at Spring Hill Baptist Church at 3811 Old Nassauville Road. The Red Cross also sent an emergency response vehicle from Jacksonville to assist firefighters by providing water and snacks.
By 10 p.m., the fire was contained and people were back in their homes, but the Nassauville Volunteer Fire department planned to be back at first light checking on hot spots and the Division of Forestry would return to try and establish the cause of the fire.
Resident Hubert Weber said he keeps the area around his mobile home cleared, but he knows he's not out of the woods yet.
"My worry, at this point, is it could flare up again," Weber said.
