Multi-Vehicle Wreck Shuts Down I-95 Early This Morning

Three People Hospitalized; One Charged With DUI

POSTED: Monday, June 12, 2006

A multi-vehicle pile-up closed northbound Interstate 95 in St. Johns County just before 1 a.m. Monday near International Golf Parkway.

The Florida Highway Patrol said Adam Barber, 24, of St. Augustine was driving north on I-95, going faster than the tractor-trailer in front of him. FHP said he rear-ended the truck in front of him, spun out, and caused a chain reaction accident involving five cars.

Barber originally took off on foot, but FHP caught him a short distance away.

Barber was taken to Baptist South Hospital with minor injuries. The truck driver, 48-year-old Kelvin Hoffert of Orange Park, wasn’t injured.

The driver of a third car, 32-year-old Justa Giron of West Palm Beach, had serious injuries and was also taken to Baptist South. His passenger, Omar Gonzalez, 31, of Lake Worth had critical injuries and was taken to the same hospital.

The driver of the fourth vehicle involved, Marilee Parra, 34, of Jacksonville, had serious injuries and was also taken to Baptist South.

The fifth driver, a 17-year old girl, had unknown injuries.

Barber is being charged with driving under the influence, leaving the scene of an accident, careless driving and suspended driver’s license.
