Dozens Of Teens Get Summer Jobs, Training Opportunities With City

Dozens of teens recently became Jacksonville's newest city employees in a job experience designed not only to offer students a chance to earn extra money, but also an investment in their futures.

Nearly 150 students packed the Main Library downtown Monday morning for their job orientation, which included a musical performance for the Jacksonville students.

"Mostly, I hope to get more inspiration," said one student attending the job training.

The opportunities the students will get during their summer job for the next four weeks is part of Mayor John Peyton's summer jobs program.

"They're actually working 20 hours a week, and one day a week will be dedicated to training here at City Hall," said training and development leader Annette Davis.

The students who attended orientation before heading off to their jobs Tuesday got special guides that explain money management and job etiquette to prepare them for their journeys.

"When you talk about exposure to the workplace and you talk about your career and what you want to become, you can learn about the different opportunities available just by having exposure," Peyton said.

Several weeks ago, the city hosted several job fairs to recruit students ages 16 to 18 for the summer.

The opportunity provided by the program has opened the door for a variety of opportunities for the students.

"Extra training, and I can put this on my college resume, and extra money for the summer and just to also have fun, too," said student Genoveya Draper, who will work for public works this summer.

The orientation was designed to keep the student's attention with music and dancing, while at the same time keeping them informed and ready for work.
