JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- An 18-year-old who police said was beaten with a baseball bat on Sunday has died, and the man accused of attacking the teen is now charged with murder.
Investigators said Michael Ankney was arguing with a woman at her home in the 8800 block of Berry Avenue in Arlington when a neighbor, Justin McCarthy, 26, got involved. McCarthy allegedly hit Ankney in the head with a bat.
Ankney was taken to Shands-Jacksonville Medical Center, where he died on Wednesday.
McCarthy was initially charged with attempted second-degree murder. McCarthy returned to court Thursday morning on a charge of murder and was ordered held without bond pending an arraignment on July 13.
The sheriff's office said there have now been 64 murders in Jacksonville in 2006.
