Shark Bites Reported In St. Johns, Volusia, Brevard Counties

POSTED: Sunday, July 9, 2006

Lifeguards said a young boy swimming Sunday in knee-deep water near the Ponte Vedra Inn and Club was bitten on the ankle by a shark.

St. Johns County Fire-Rescue said the 11-year-old boy was in waist-deep water when he was bitten. He was hospitalized, but the injuries were not life-threatening.

Witnesses say they saw a shark swimming in the shallow water near the time of the attack.

Volusia County authorities said a tourist didn't need medical treatment after being bitten on his foot by a shark Sunday afternoon.

The 40-year-old New York was in waist-deep water near the New Smyrna Beach jetty when he was bitten shortly after 5 p.m. A beach patrol officer said the man had two small cuts on the top of his foot.

On Saturday in Brevard County, authorities said a teenager was apparently bitten on the leg by a shark while swimming in the ocean.

Fire-rescue officials said the boy's mother heard him scream and saw him pulled under the water.

Authorities said he had a "significant bite" to one of his calf muscles. The boy was flown to a hospital, where he was in stable condition.

If confirmed as a shark bite, it would be at least the third shark bite of the season in Brevard County.

A man's hand was bitten May 10 off Cocoa Beach. Another man bitten May 11 on both feet required 30 stitches in his left foot and 150 stitches on the right foot to close the wounds.
