2 Injured -- 1 Critically -- In Golf Cart Crash

POSTED: Monday, September 11, 2006

Two people were injured -- one critically -- in the crash of a golf cart at the Sawgrass Country Club early Saturday morning.

About 12:30 a.m., deputies and rescue personnel were called to the 18th hole. Richard Stines, 51, and Nichole Sargent, 19, both of Ponte Vedra Beach, were taken by air ambulance to Shands-Jacksonville Medical Center.

Stines was listed in critical condition and Sargent was listed in stable condition.

According to the St. Johns County Sheriff's Office, Stines was driving the golf cart with Sargent and a third person, John Messner, 25, sitting in the front seat, and William Conway, 25, owner of the cart, standing on the back. Stines allegedly lost control of the cart, ejecting Stines, who landed on concrete.

The other two men were not injured.

Investigators said that alcohol may have contributed to the crash, but the investigation is continuing.
