Judge Delays Murder Trial Of Man Accused Of Killing Sarah Lunde

POSTED: Thursday, September 14, 2006

A circuit judge has agreed give defense lawyers more time to prepare in the capital murder trial of David Lee Onstott, who is accused of killing 11-year-old Sarah Michelle Lunde last year.

The trial was set to begin next month, but will now begin March 12, Circuit Judge Ronald Ficarrotta ruled Tuesday. Onsott's attorney, Assistant Public Defender John Skye, also told the judge he plans to seek a change of venue for the trial.

Prosecutors are seeking the death penalty for Onstott, a 38-year-old registered sex offender who has pleaded not guilty to first-degree murder and attempted sexual battery.

Sarah's body was found in an abandoned fish pond near the family's home in Ruskin on April 16, 2005.

Onstott admitted his guilt to investigators, jail staff and his mother, prosecutors said. But court documents show there is little physical evidence so far linking him to the crime.
