ADT dispatcher saves Miss. woman's life

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -

Delores White, of Jackson, Miss., says if it weren't for ADT Home Security dispatcher Maya Harris, her son would be without both his parents.

White's husband died last month, just days before White received a life-saving call from Harris in Jacksonville, warning her that she needed to get out of her house because her carbon monoxide detector had been activated.

When firefighters responded, they found a faulty furnace had poisoned 70 percent of the air with carbon monoxide.

"If it was not for Maya, I wouldn't be here today," White said. "A few more minutes and the Fire Department said that we probably would have died."

White and Harris reunited in person Tuesday in Jacksonville. It was already emotional enough for White, but she was more than thankful her husband had upgraded their ADT system just weeks before he died. White said he specifically asked for the carbon monoxide detector, a sign, she said, that her husband is still protecting her.

"Taking care of me. Yeah, that's what I feel," White said. "Even today, he's still here and looking after me. And I'm grieving. But I just had to come down here to thank her for saving me."

White was thrilled to not only get to meet the woman who saved her life, but also to see Harris receive the recognition she deserves. Company officials drove from their Boca Raton headquarters to present Harris with the Lifesaver award, which has an emotional meaning to her as well.

"I couldn't believe it was me. I was honored," Harris said. "I was very blessed to know she was OK because I have lost two family members to carbon monoxide poisoning before. So I was just blessed to know right away that she and her family were OK."

White said she will remain an ADT customer for life, adding that she and Harris will also remain in touch.
