It's the first day for the Mega Pet Adoption Event in Jacksonville! If you're in the market for a new best friend, this event is for you. It's going on at the Fairgrounds downtown all weekend. Dozens of pet rescues and shelters in Northeast Florida are hoping to find homes for dogs and cats. Channel 4's Ashley Harding joins us now live from the Fairgrounds. Ashley, how many pets are they hoping to have adopted? 3 3 They need to adopt out about one thousand animals. So far, we know about 250 have been adopted. But there are many more who need good homes.Like this one right here. 00-05 15-20 50-55TRACK Some were big...some were small...most were quite loud... ///nats of dog barking///But as Hillary Carpenter found out today...////nats "awww!!! You big boy!"///That "special one" was just perfect.50:23--50:36 "I have a two year old cat that I adopted here in November of 2012 who will be getting a new boyfriend she doesn't know about yet. I told her I'd be bringing her home a baby kitten, but instead she's getting a new boyfriend!"TRACK Hillary's new buddy Sherman is just one of about one thousand local dogs and cats in need of tender loving care! It's the Mega Pet Adoption Event, where dozens of shelters and rescues from all over...including here in Jacksonville and Nassau County...get together at the Fairgrounds. The hope is to to get all of these potential pets a good, safe place to go home to."if the shelters go full, they do have to euthanize for space and we don't want that. We're all working together, First Coast No More Homeless Pets, and our coalition partners, to try to make our community no kill."TRACK Not only is each animal wonderful in its own way...they're all fully neutered, spayed, microchipped, and vaccinated. The only thing that's missing...is you!"it really does enrich your life, it can be better for your lifestyle. You can walk them, play with them. It really is a comfort to have them and their unconditional love."///NATS "hi Baby."///TRACK That's something Hillary Carpenter, that's the best part."the fact that you're bringing it home...a cat that might not have had a chance on the streets, you're bringing it home! And you get to love it. And he gets to love you, that's pretty awesome." 3 If you're wondering what it takes to adopt, all it will cost you is a $20 pet adoption fee. Just $20.00. The event goes until Sunday. Adoption hours are from 10 am to 6 pm. Live from the fairground, AH, Ch 4, TLS.
