3 In LOCAL NEWS ... The trial for Jacksonville attorney Kelly Mathis begins today -- he's the accused "mastermind" in the Allied Veterans of the World illegal gambling and racketeering case. Mathis is the only one of the top members of Allied Veterans who did NOT take a plea deal. Channel 4's Elizabeth Campbell joins us LIVE with what's expected today in court -- Elizabeth? 3 3 The jury was seated yesterday and opening statements begin today in the trial of Kelly Mathis -- who has claimed his innocence from the very beginning. :00-:10::34-:40TRACK - Kelly Mathis is charged with dozens of felonies in the Allied Veterans case ... And today - he'll face the jury who will decide his fate.Mathis was there as 100 potential jurors were called for the selection process this week ... And on Wednesday - six were chosen to hear the case. Prosecutors say Mathis was the mastermind of a charity scheme to raise money through Internet cafes that allowed people to gamble on computers.The charges against Mathis include racketeering and money laundering. He and his attorney Mitch Stone have continued to claim his innocence and told the court Mathis was simply providing services as a lawyer.SOT - 3:49 he's doing fine. ARC2 05-30-13 Fifty-seven people were arrested in the Allied Veterans operation. Prosecutors have dropped charges against 15 people and reached plea deals with seven others, including three once described as among the leaders of the operation.
