3 Saint Johns County commissioners have declared a local state of emergency. Their vote was unanimous .. as the county tries to speed up assistance for residents who are in danger of losing their homes to beach erosion. Channel 4's Chris Parenteau is covering St. Johns County .. and is joining us LIVE from South Ponte Vedra Beach. Chris, has the work started yet? They have. Just 3 00-1022-2737-4358-1'02 SOT Chuck Herklotz 29:14 It's always frustrating when it takes a longer time than you want it to.VO Chuch Herklotz has watched his back yard was away due to heavy waves, wind, and rain over the last couple of weeks. He was at the emergency commission meeting this morning and is glad the work has begun. Because of the declaration, permits for work on a temporary wall are allowed immediately, and he got one this afternoon. SOT 28:58 We're very anxious and disappointed that it took so long, but we are kind of relieved that we have the temporary wall going in, and we are hopeful that we will have the permanent wall going in shortly. STAND UP The Herklot's beach access ramp used to take them to right here, about 30 feet from the end of their yard out onto the beach. Now, beacuse of that erosion, it's more than 60 feet from their yard to where that ramp took them, but that ramp is now totally gone. SOT Marge Herklotz 29:31 I felt really devastated about what we lost out there. You know, we're at a point where its gone, so I am just ready to look forward to moving forward and having this finished and moving forward with it. VO The state of emergency declaration does not help the homeowners cover the cost of the temporary or permanent walls, but they say that just having the immediate protection from further damage is helpful enough. SOT 29:48 The fear was that I was just going to keep losing my land. That's it, and that it wouldn't stop. That's all I saw for the last week is that it kept going and going. I had no idea when it was going to stop. Now that the wall is going up, I can sleep. The temporary wall will stretch for about 10 houses, giving them protection, and there was some frustration at this morning's meeting from people who live just outside that area, worried that because they can't get a permit immediately, they could be going through this same problem soon.
