A man struck by a vehicle Tuesday night while riding a bicycle on North Liberty at Seventh Street remains in critical condition.
Roy Lee McGrath has been in the trauma center at Shands Jacksonville Medical since he was struck by a vehicle that police say kept driving after hitting the bicyclist about 9 p.m.
Danny Mellor, McGrath's roommate, said he's not surprised this happened.
"I can believe it, especially in this neighborhood," Mellor said. "You got these little chitter bugs running around here, and it's bound to happen. Probably not the first time someone's been hit around here and someone took off either."
Mellor said McGrath is expected to survive the crash, but he's not doing well.
"Right now he's got a fractured ankle, four or five broken ribs, abrasions and injuries," Mellor said. "Blood on his brain and liquids in him. They're draining it as we speak."
Police at the scene said they were looking for a white SUV with front-end damage. They have not provided an update on their investigation.
Mellor said he hopes whoever hit McGrath is caught.
"I think that whoever did it really needs to be caught because they blew through that red light and hit that poor man doing 65 mph," he said.
Anyone with any information about the hit-and-run is asked to call Crime Stoppers at 866-845-TIPS.
