Burned body found in truck

MACCLENNY, Fla. -

Deputies in Baker County are investigating after a man's body was found in a burning truck early Saturday morning in Macclenny.

According to Sheriff Joey Dobson, firefighters were called to Robbie's Auto Repair at 136 W. Macclenny Ave. because a witness heard an explosion and a pickup truck was on fire. He said the explosion was likely a tire that popped from the heat of the flames.

When they put it out, Dobson said they found a man's body inside. He said it was burned beyond recognition.

Dobson said the body was found in an Isuzu pick-up truck that had been sitting behind the repair shop for months. The place's owner, Robbie Kirkland, said was waiting to make repairs to the truck. He told Jason Law he didn't know why a man was inside.

"Maybe he crawled in there fell asleep with a cigarette or something and caught fire, something like that," said Kirkland.

The Sheriff said there are no "physical signs of foul play" and the body is "burnt beyond recognition."

The body was taken to the Medical Examiner's office in Gainesville to determine the identity and cause of death.

"We are hoping it's not foul play, but we just don't know right now," Dobson said.

The Florida Department of Law Enforcement has been brought in to help with the investigation.
