A 56-year-old Bunnell man was killed when his motorcycle struck a tree Monday afternoon in Flagler County, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.

State troopers said John Melvin was riding south on U.S. Highway 1 just north of Old Dixie Highway in the right lane just after 5 p.m. They said as he tried to navigate a left curve in the road, his motorcycle went off the roadway and onto the grass shoulder.

The motorcycle slid into the tree line and Melvin struck a tree, troopers said. He died at the scene.

Troopers said Melvin was not wearing a helmet. They said speed does not appear to be a factor in the crash.
