JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -

A homeowner shot and killed a burglary suspect after a fight Tuesday night, Jacksonville police said.

Police said Patrick Jones, 24, was looking for homes and cars to break into while roaming a Westside neighborhood near Dayton Road and Lane Avenue South at about 5:30 p.m.Patrick Jones

Police said Jones was involved in a fight with a homeowner, who shot and killed him.

The homeowner, whose identity was not released, has not been arrested.

The family at the home where the shooting happened did not want to comment Wednesday.

Jones was an ex-con with a long arrest history. He served six months in prison from 2010-11 for felony traffic offenses. Jones' other arrests were on charges of burglary, car theft, aggravated battery on a pregnant woman, drug possession and resisting arrest.

The 24-year-old's father, Patrick Jones, spoke Wednesday about his son's death. He said he knew his son had an extensive criminal history but does not believe what witnesses are saying about him.

"They are making it sound like he was terrorizing folks and just breaking into cars and breaking into houses and he was responsible for all this chaos going on," he said. "My son is not that kind of a person."

Neighbor Virginia Kresmery described what happened at her nearby home Tuesday. She said someone tore down her front door and stole her computer and other items while her mother was home. She believes that same person ran next door and tried to rob another family.

"I am in the house. I am hearing screaming and yelling. 'You don't live here. What are you doing here?'" Kresmery said. "And by the time I came out, my husband and mom are in the driveway and the neighbors screaming, I think. I see them going that way."

Witnesses said that same man, believed to be Jones, ran down the road and tried to steal a car and ended up being shot by a homeowner.

"If someone is doing bodily harm to you or trying to kill you, you have the right to defend yourself. You have the right to meet force with force, according to state law," Channel 4 crime analyst Ken Jefferson said. "But if the person is committing a crime and is no threat to you, you are taking it to another level and may face charges."
