Good evening. That local breaking news alert is on the hit-and-run death of a Jacksonville Beach man. Sources closes to the investigation tell us the car that investigators had been searching for has been recovered. Right now-- we are waiting to learn more about possible arrests. Meanwhile--friends and family are remembering 25 year old Daniel Stein who was hit following Fourth of July celebrations. Police say Stein was crossing the street at A1A and 13th Avenue North when he was hit. Police had been searching since Friday-- for the driver of a black Mercedes with damage. TRACK Heather Anne Callaway fought back tears as she talked about her friend and former coworker, Daniel Stein. He was hit by a car and killed as he crossed the street early Saturday morning. 43:06--43:18 "Heartbreaking.Everybody here has just been crushed by it. It's unbelievable that this could happen to anyone,especially someone so close, someone you love so much." TRACK Callaway is a manager at Tacolu, where Stein had worked in the kitchen. Even though he had left his job, his coworkers say he had a way of making any situation better and his presence is missed. 45:03--45:15 "Even in the front of the house, when he was out in the front of the house....everybody was so close. It was such a tight little circle.So for Friday night to happen...you think, it's like a blink.Then everything changes for everybody." TRACK Police are still investigating.Once the driver is identified, he or she will likely be prosecuted under the new hit and run law that went into effect just days ago. The law created a: --Four year minimum mandatory sentence for drivers who leave the scene of accidents involving death --it also requires the offender's driver's license revoked for 3 years. TRACK Until an arrest is made, Stein's friends are honoring his memory.This Facebook post on the Tacolu page highlights the grief they are feeling.Heather Callaway has a message for the driver: it's not too late to do the right thing. 43:39--43:53 "That person probably wants to sleep at night.
