Hundreds of local children walked or rode their bikes to school Wednesday as part of an international program promoting sidewalk safety.

The students learned about the importance of crossing the street with help from a crossing guard and the importance of wearing their helmets on their bikes.

More than 250,000 students around the country were expected to participate. Atlantic Beach Elementary School said it appeared that twice as many children participated this year compared to last year.

Students at Sadie T. Tillis Elementary School on the Westside also walked to school as part of the event.

The leading cause of death among children between ages 3 and 14 is road traffic injuries, which is why the event is so important to school-aged children.
