Christopher Barrios Remembered 2 Years After Slaying
Over the past two years, the family of Christopher Barrios has attended countless court hearings and anxiously awaited the moment when they hope justice will be served. That moment has yet to come.
"To me his body is gone but his spirit is still alive," said Christopher's grandmother, Sue Rodriquez.
The 6-year-old boy was last seen March 8, 2007 in his Glynn County neighborhood. His disappearance prompted a massive search, which ended when his body was found wrapped in trash bags and dumped near some woods. He had been assaulted, raped and killed.
Two years later, a memorial remains near the location where the child's body was found.
With tears in her eyes, Rodriquez talked about her favorite little boy who she said loved his family and loved life.
Christopher's accused killers lived nearby. George Edenfield and his parents, David and Peggy Edenfield, are all been charged with murder.
Peggy Edenfield pleaded guilty. The trial for her husband has been delayed in order for their court-appointed attorneys to get the funding needed for a proper defense.
Rodriquez has been to every hearing. She said what's going on with David Edenfield's trial just adds to the pain of losing Christopher.
"We are still suffering because we are waiting for the day they are put away so this won't ever happen -- not by them. They are still here, and my little baby is gone," Rodriguez said.
As Christopher's family waits for justice, they have also been watching a similar case unfold in Putnam County. Rodriguez said her heart go out to Haleigh Cummings and her family.
She said she knows just how they are feeling.
"The hurt they felt when their baby was gone is the same I felt. I know what they are going through. I wish them luck, but as far as it's been, I don't give them a lot of hope," Rodriguez said.
Rodriguez said the family plans to hold a reunion at the end of the month for everyone who volunteered when Christopher was missing. She said they would hold the reunion because they made some life-long friends during the search.
