Its one local town's tradition .. an annual Christmas parade that includes marchers carrying the confederate flag. Tonight .. this town is divided on whether that flag should stay or go. 3 Brunswick will hold that parade tomorrow .. and The Sons of Confederate Veterans will be participating with the rebel battle flag. They've been doing it at Christmas in that south Georgia city for many years ..but now some local black leader, including Brunswick's first black Mayor- elect, say the time has come for this tradition to end. Channel 4's Tim Pulliam has just returned from Brunswick where he brought both sides together for a face to face discussion of this emotional issue. Tim. 3 3 It's a symbol that carries a different message depending on who you ask.Tonight we talked to the son's of confederate veterans and Brunswick's first Black mayor about how they view the controversy. 3 0-527-321:29-1:34 The conversation took place here at Hofwyl-Broadfield Rice Plantation. It's the back drop for where Sons of Confederate Veterans member Dr. Hal Crowe, reenacts historic moments during the Civil War.He says back then, the Confederates Flag acted as guide during battle for his ancestors Dr. Hal Crowe/Sons of Confederate Veterans 041009 All the members of the sons of confederate veterans are descendants of confederate soldiers. We are still proud of the principles for which they were fighting for, which were for freedom and the constitution, states rights and this is one of those emblems for which they were fighting. It's that heritage they proudly display at the Brunswick Christmas Parade each year.Crowe says the Battle Flag gets a bad reputation thanks to the KKK and mainstream media who portray the symbol as one of hate and racism. But Crowe says Sons of Confederate Veterans do not honor the flag for those reasons. It's out of respect for their loved ones. 041323 I think most people who are aware of their ancestry and family history. View these things with pride. But for Brunswick's first Black Mayor- elect. The Confederate Flag is a reminder of the slavery his ancestors endured.Cornell Harvey/Mayor-elect 041712 How they used to treat blacks. And that's what it it symbolizes to me. It symbolizes the same thing to a number of other blacks as well.Harvey says he would prefer not to see it at Saturday's Christmas parade. But he will not stop the Sons of 3 TAG The bottom line it's freedom of speech the Mayor says. Both the mayor and Dr.Crowe respectfully disagree on the issue. And there's no bad blood there.Dr. Crowe told me he has a great deal of respect for the mayor-elect and told me he would have voted for him, if he lived in Brunswick. Are protesters expected at the parade tomorrow? Initially I was told that some black pastors were going to come together to show how much they disapprove of the flag. But I learned today, those pastors have decided not to do that.
