A clerk was shot and killed Sunday morning during an attempted robbery of an Arlington convenience store, according to police.

Just after 8 a.m., police responded to a 911 call about a robbery in progress at the Snappy Food Store on Trollie Lane.

Homicide Sgt. T.K. Waters said several shots were fired inside the store by one gunman who came in as the store was opening for the day.

Rescue personnel pronounced the clerk dead at the scene. Police later identified him as 19-year-old Moussa Maida.

Witnesses said the gunman fled from the store in a charcoal-gray four-door Acura with a Florida license plate and dual exhaust with chrome tips. It was last seen eastbound on Merrill Road.

The gunman was described as between 5 feet 5 and 5 feet 7 inches tall and very thin. He was wearing a tan camouflage hoodie jacket and black pants.

A second person may have been in the car.

Friends of Maida told Channel 4 he was a good person who tried to avoid trouble and had planned to start classes at Jacksonville University in the fall.

"He was nice to everybody; everybody around the neighborhood knows him," Tina Dickerson said. "He was real police, real well-spoken and would help you with anything."

"There ain't no kind of way he could have had no kind of beef with nobody," Reshard Kelly said. "He was a cool cat."

Police were still at the scene on Monday morning and the store remains closed. In addition to gathering evidence in and around the scene, police were checking to see if neighboring businesses' video surveillance tapes caught an image of the robbery.
