NEW YORK CITY -

It's something you may see everyday, but think little of: The bar code.

The New York Times reports that one of the men who helped invent it has died.

The paper reports N. Joseph Woodland died at his home in Edgewater, New Jersey earlier this week at the age of 91.

According to Drexel University, Woodland and his classmate, Bernard Silver, created the technology in the 1950's.

Drexel says the barcode was first used in grocery stores in 1966.
