  • Cummings Released After Road-Rage Stop

Woman Claims Stepmother Of Missing Girl Made Threats

    LAKE MARY, Fla. -

Misty Cummings, the stepmother of missing child Haleigh Cummings, was involved in what investigators believe was a road-rage incident in Central Florida on Wednesday.

    She was released after questioning.

Courtney Ballinger told the Seminole County Sheriff's Office that a driver and passenger of a blue Dodge Caliber kept gesturing and making threats as they were driving near her on Interstate 4 and on Maitland Avenue about 11:15 a.m.

Ballinger claimed she was chased for about 10 miles.

"They need to hurry. There's someone following me and she's harassing me, telling me she's going to beat my ass," Ballinger told a 911 operator. "She's waving something at me. I don't know if she has a gun. Please send somebody."

Deputies stopped the Dodge driven by Donna Brock, 43, of Georgia, with Cummings, 17, of Satsuma, in the passenger seat, at a gas station just off the Lake Mary Boulevard exit of I-4. Deputies said they approached the car with guns drawn.

No gun was found in the car and Cummings and Brock were released after being questioned.

It is believed that Misty Cummings has been staying in the Orlando area recently.

WKMG-TV in Orlando reported that Brock is a volunteer for Texas Equusearch, a mounted search-and-rescue group that has been involved in the search for Haleigh Cummings.

Cummings' attorney, Robert Fields, told Channel 4's Bruce Hamilton that it was obvious the situation was bogus because no gun was found. He also pointed out inconsistencies with the 911 caller, saying she was able to provide a license plate number to the 911 operator even though she said the car was following her and pulled alongside her.

Cummings was Misty Croslin and the girlfriend of Haleigh's father, Ronald, in February when the 5-year-old disappeared. Misty was watching Haleigh and her younger brother while their father was at work the night Haleigh disappeared.

She told Putnam County investigators that she put Haleigh to bed and when she got up in the middle of the night to go to the bathroom, the girl was gone.

An Amber Alert was issued the next day. Investigators believed Haleigh was taken from the home. Extensive searches of their neighborhood and investigation into more than 4,000 tips phoned in to the Putnam County Sheriff's Office have not provided any answers to what happened to the girl.

Anyone who has any information about what happened to Haleigh is asked to call Crimestoppers at 888-277-8477.
