A woman faces charges after a dead baby was found in the dumpster of a Fort Lauderdale hotel.
On Aug. 10, Fort Lauderdale police were told a woman at Broward General Medical Center was suffering from symptoms as the result of a recent pregnancy. The woman, identified as Alexandria Sladon-Marler, told doctors she recently had an abortion and her symptoms were the result of the procedure.
A medical evaluation of Sladon-Marler didn't support her statement, said police. Doctors told investigators Sladon-Marler had recently given birth and they were unsure of the baby's whereabouts. Sladon-Marler had been transported to the hospital from the Fort Lauderdale Beach Place Hotel and Suites.
Earlier in the day at the hotel, a housekeeper told WPLG-TV that Sladon-Marler approached her, asking her to come to her room.
"She come to me and said, 'Can you come clean my room today? I just got out of surgery,'" the housekeeper, who didn't want to be identified, said. "I said, 'Uh oh -- she pregnant.' I worry. I say, 'Ok, ok.'"
But the housekeeper was devastated by what she saw when she entered room 118.
"When I go inside the room, I just close the front door and I saw blood... on the floor... on the sink," she told Turchin. "And, I come in the room towards the bed -- blood, blood, blood. And I said, 'Uh, oh. I'm not going to do that.'"
Inside her hotel room, detectives found a large amount of blood in the bathroom and on and around the beds -- but they didn't find a baby.
As detectives searched the hotel grounds, they came across the hotel's garbage cans. Inside, they found a dead infant boy wrapped in a towel and placed inside a pillowcase.
Sladon-Marler has had several run-ins with the law. She has been arrested a handful of times on drug charges and most recently on municipal ordinance violations.
Sladon-Marler is still being treated at a nearby medical facility. She will be charged once she has been released, said police.
