Columbia County deputies were called Thursday morning after a bank reported a man on a bicycle at the drive-through window was trying to cash a forged $300 check on the account of a man who had died.
Deputies say that staff at Columbia County Bank branch on U.S. 90 West was aware the customer had died and called law enforcement. The Sheriff's Office says Ray Newby, 52, admitted to deputies that he forged the signature and attempted to cash the check.
Newby, of White Springs, was arrested without incident and charged with uttering a forged instrument, grand theft and fraud.
Investigators believe Newby cashed other checks in the recent past and additional charges are possible.
Newby was booked into the Columbia County Detention Facility and held on a $15,000 bond.
