A 22-year-old St. Johns County man wanted in an attempted carjacking was identified, located and arrested less than 24 hours after he approached a woman at a Kangaroo store on State Road 16.

After photos of the man wanted by St. Johns County Sheriff's Office were circulated to the media, a tip led detectives to Ryan McSwain at his apartment on Whispering Woods Lane. He was brought in for questioning and positively identified by the victim in a photo lineup.

The incident began shortly after 4:30 a.m. Tuesday morning at the gasoline pumps of to Kangaroo store. The 31-year-old woman said that as she returned to her vehicle from making a purchase, a man approached and demanded her vehicle. When she left him at her car and went inside the store and asked the clerk to call the Sheriff’s Office, the man was unable to start the car, got out and walked away.

A second woman was was seen on surveillance video talking with the suspect contacted detectives after seeing the media coverage.

McSwain was booked into the St. Johns County County Jail, where he remains on bail set at $25,000.
