Driver dies in single-car crash on I-295

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -

A 56-year-old driver was killed Thursday afternoon when his 2004 Mercedes left Interstate 295 just before Hecksher Drive and struck a light pole and tree, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.

Troopers say Dennis Fernandez was driving north on I-295 at 2:40 p.m. just after a rain shower when he lost control for an unknown reason.  His car rotated over the grass shoulder before hitting the pole, then into the woods line and hitting a large tree.

Fernandez was transported to Shands Jacksonville Medical Center, where he died.
