JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -

A 54-year-old man was killed early Tuesday morning when his car ran into the back of a disabled tractor-trailer in an eastbound lane of Interstate 10 near Yellow Water Road, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.

The FHP says the big rig had mechanical issues and was slowing or had stopped in the outside travel lane about 6 a.m. when a Kia sedan hit the back of the trailer and ran up under it.

The car's driver, 54-year-old Thomas Anderson, of Fort White, as pronounced dead at the scene.

Ramon Alvarez, 36, of Jacksonville, who was the driver of the tractor-trailer, was not injured.

Troopers say charges are pending.

The FHP closed all eastbound lanes of I-10 near the intersection with U.S. 301 immediately after the fatal crash. One of the lanes reopened about 9 a.m. and the other just after 10 a.m.

Motorists were diverted onto State Road 228 or U.S. 90 as an alternative route.
