The search continues for one man after a drug-related shooting at a San Pablo gas station that led to police gunfire in front of a Southside apartment complex on Wednesday night.
Ten minutes after 19-year-old Austin Duensing was shot in a car at the intersection of Beach Boulevard and San Pablo Road, police pulled over the suspect vehicle near Timberwood Trace Apartments off Atlantic Boulevard.
Police said after a passenger in the car -- now identified as 23-year-old Randall Someillan -- jumped out of the car with a handgun, Officer C.R. Short fired three shots.
Someillan was not hit by the gunfire and continued to run. After an overnight manhunt, police said they found him hiding in a tree. He has been charged with aggravated assault on a law enforcement officer.
Duensing was transported to Shands Jacksonville Medical Center, where he remains in critical condition.
The driver of the car Someillan (left) ran from will not be charged because he pulled over when police pulled him over, but the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office is sill looking for Eric Tovey (right) in connection with the initial shooting.
Police said Duensing and his girlfriend met Someillan and Tovey at a Shell station at the corner of Beach and San Pablo to buy some marijuana. Police said the drug deal turned into a robbery and Tovey shot Duensing three times, beat him and dumped him on the side of the road. Duensing's girlfriend was able to get out of the car after the initial shooting and called police.
Alyssia Hayes said one of the bullets fired at the Atlantic Boulevard traffic stop came through the wall of her apartment and narrowly missed her baby.
"I told the kids to get down, and we stayed down," Hayes said. "I thought at first she got hit. I saw the wall debris over her face and everything."
Police initially said there was an exchange of gunfire at the Atlantic Boulevard scene, but now say Someillan never fired his weapon at the officer.
Because no one was hit, Officer Short remains on duty. His decision to fire his weapon will be reviewed by JSO.
