Elderly woman scammed out of thousands
2 people scammed woman in Walmart parking lot
An 83-year-old woman is scammed in the parking lot of a Walmart and is now out nearly $13,000.
Police said the elderly woman was approached by a man and a woman in the parking lot off San Jose Boulevard and they convinced her that she had stumbled upon a box filled with cash.
The man told her he worked at First Guaranty Bank across the street and convinced her that she would receive a reward.
Police reports said they convinced her she could get a $24,000 dollar reward if she contributed some cash for the bond on the amount of money.
The woman bought in and took them to her bank, the Vystar credit union on San Jose Boulevard. Reports said she then handed over a cashiers check in the amount of $9,000 from VyStar.
Channel 4 crime analyst Ken Jefferson was saddened to hear what the police report called "exploitation of the elderly".
"The elderly are usually the victim of these types of crimes," said Jefferson. "They're very vulnerable and come from the generation of taking a man at his word. And these are crooks, thieves and liars that will prey upon these types of people."
But even after the elderly woman gave them $9,000, the man and the woman still weren't done. They convinced her that they needed more money.
They then went to a different ATM, this time for a $3,000 cash advance.
In total, the crooks received $12,601.18.
"A lot of them have money stashed in banks or several from life savings or lifetime of working, to live off of," said Jefferson. "And it's a low down dirty crook who would take advantage of that."
Channel 4's Scott Johnson stopped by the woman's house. She didn't' want to go on camera but said she'll leave this in the hands of police.
Jefferson said the crooks are probably long gone. Even if they're caught, the money may never come back.
"She'll never see that money again. Even if they're captured and ordered to pay she'll never see that money again," said Jefferson.
