Escapee Shot Outside Jail Dies
Putnam County Inmate Pronounced Dead At Hospital
Published On: Oct 14 2011 02:30:32 PM EDT Updated On: Aug 06 2009 05:24:23 AM EDTA state prisoner shot by a Putnam County corrections officer Wednesday morning after he climbed the razor-wire fence has died, according to the sheriff's office.
Michael Campbell, 31, was still on prison property when he was shot once by a guard with a shotgun.
Campbell was rushed to Putnam Community Hospital with life-threatening injuries after the 9:35 a.m. shooting. He was pronounced dead about 30 minutes later.
Sheriff Jeff Hardy said Campbell was in the recreation yard when he began to climb the fence. Hardy said he was shot after ignoring repeated orders to stop and made it across the fence.
Campbell was serving a 10 year sentence on a conviction for kidnapping, aggravated assault, possession of a firearm by a convicted felon and possession of cocaine. He was being temporarily housed at the Putnam County Jail so he could testify at a child custody hearing.
"The officers were doing their job. If they weren't this guy would be running around in the community right now," Hardy said. "Unfortunately, someone had to die -- but that was his choice."

The Florida Department of Law Enforcement is conducting an investigation into the incident.
In April, two Putnam County prisoners escaped and lead law enforcement on a six-day multi-state manhunt before they were recaptured. The day of the escape, Doni Ray Brown and Timothy Fletcher are accused of killing Fletcher's grandmother and stealing her car.
In the weeks following that escape, Hardy fired one corrections officer, disciplined eight others and the director of the jail resigned.
