A former Vero Beach police officer charged with three counts of lewd and lascivious sexual battery on a minor was found guilty Tuesday after a two-day trial in St Johns County.
James Scharfschwerdt could get up to 45 years in prison when he's sentenced in February.
Deputies said the investigation began when a teen boy reported an incident that occurred several years ago alleging that Scharfschwerdt had sex with him.
Detectives said they learned that Scharfschwerdt was a former Vero Beach police officer in South Florida and was arrested in 1988 on similar allegations from numerous victims. He was acquitted on those charges.
Detectives said they served a search warrant at Scharfschwerdt's home in St. Johns County, where they seized several items of possible evidence.
