Family found unconscious; mother charged with child abuse
2 children tell police woman gave them pills to sleep for very long time
A 30-year-old woman was committed for a mental evaluation and charged with aggravated child abuse after police officers found her and her three children unconscious on the floor of their Northwest Jacksonville apartment on Saturday afternoon.
Police say they were called to the Washington Heights Apartment Complex on Moncrief Road about 5:30 p.m. to assist the Department of Children and Families. A DCF employee responding to an alert about Liara McGlothan, who the agency had previously investigated on reports of child abuse, had requested officers to conduct a welfare check when no one answered the door.
Channel 4 was told when officers also got no response at the door, they entered the apartment through a window and found McGlothan and three children unresponsive.
When Jacksonville Fire-Rescue arrived, McGlothan was assisted to her feet, and two boys and a girl, all between the ages of three and 10, were carried outside. All four were hospitalized hospital Saturday night.
Police said one of the children claimed to be given three red vitamins by McGlothan Saturday night. Another child told police of being given five white pills that tasted nasty and was told they would sleep for a long time.
DCF has taken custody of the children, who were all hospitalized for observation but are expected to make full recoveries.
McGlothan was Baker-Acted and arrested on a charge of aggravated child abuse.
Police say the case remains under active investigation.
