3 President Obama says the gap between rich and poor is far too wide today. He's calling for a hike in the federal minimum wage, saying an increase is a good step for families and the economy as a whole. His words come before hundreds of workers protested TODAY -- holding signs and chanting about not being able to survive. Minimum wage is 7-dollars and 25- an hour. Channel 4's Elizabeth Campbell was at a protest earlier today at a local McDonald's. Elizabeth joins us LIVE with more on the message the protestors were trying to send... elizabeth. 3 3 LIVE INTRO - áá will try to figure out a way to be demonstrative.Unfortunately I can't get one of the signs because a woman took them back to Fernandinaáá 00-0505-1035-43There were only about 7 or 8 protestors here today but they are among hundreds nationwide protesting fast food chains like this McDonald's where they say they are not paying employees enough AND not providing sick days.Protest ers I spoke to say these conditions need to improve.SOT - 1005 everybody who needs a job needs to have a fair wage needs to be able to make a fair living and its not that mcdonalds can ' t afford to do it if they can afford to pay their execs and the people who run their business they can afford to pay their workers TRACK - A higher minimum wage and sick days -- that's what these protestors are asking for. They say because local fast food workers can't leave their job to protest -- their protesting for them.Hundreds of protestors around the country held signs and chanted chants -- all the way from New York -- to her e locally in Jacksonville.SOT - 1130 most restaurants done give sick days which means people who are sick with colds are coming in and serving my food and everyone elses food and im very concerned about that TRACK - I spoke with a mother of 2 who works at a local Subway -- she wants to remain anonymous but says it IS true for her company that they DON'T get sick days.SOT - 3727 if im sick or one of my kids is sick i can call someone and get them to cover it but if they cant cover it i have to go in i dont get sick days or vacation days none of that TRACK - Not only is this mother upset about not having sick days -- but she also says she and fellow workers can barely survive on the amount of money they're paid.She makes $7.79, not too much more than the national 3 McDonald's did issue a statement today that says in part -- "McDonald's and our owner-operators are committed to providing our employees with opportunities to succeed. We offer employees advancement opportunities, competitive pay and benefits. And we invest in training and professional development that helps them learn practical and transferable business skills." They went on to say that events that took place today were not strikes, that they're outside groups traveling to McDonald's. 3 3 QUESTION - When the President spoke yesterday about minimum wage, he mentioned that the gap between rich and poor is too big. What else does he want to do to help fix this?ANSWER - He called for a hike in the federal minimum wage to more than $10 an hour, saying an increase is a good step for families and the economy as a whole.He also made a general push to simplify the tax code, provide more work training in high schools and make it easier for americans to save for retirement.
