Felon convicted in retaliatory shooting

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -

A Jacksonville man was convicted Thursday evening on charges of aggravated battery with a deadly weapon and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon in a retaliatory shooting.

In February, Averitt McKenzie ambushed Carlton Johnson as he walked to his Moncrief Road apartment. Johnson was returning home from talking to police about a crime he suspected McKenzie committed.

McKenzie shot Johnson in the leg and stomach area in retaliation for talking with police.

McKenzie is a habitual felony offender with a 2006 conviction for grand theft auto. He is also a prison release re-offender. He was released from prison on a 2008 burglary conviction within three years of committing this crime.

McKenzie faces 30 years in prison. He will be sentenced the week of Feb. 25.
