GEORGETOWN, Fla. -

Putnam County sheriff's deputies arrested a 20-year-old man on several charges early Monday morning after they say he crashed a stolen SUV into a fire truck at the scene of a house fire.
According to the arrest report, firefighters were battling a fire on County Road 309 in Georgetown about 2:42 a.m. when a car driven by Herminio Espino, of Crescent City, rounded a curve and saw the emergency equipment blocking the road.

A deputy that was following the Chevrolet Trailblazer reported it was going 70 mph in a 35 mph zone. He said Espino braked and swerved to the left, hitting a power pole, then hitting the side of the fire truck he was attempting to avoid and continued on to hit another fire engine head-on.

Deputies said Espino got out and began running, but two firefighters grabbed and held him on the ground until the deputy caught up. According to the report, when the firefighters released Espino, he tried to get up and run again, but Deputy Robert Nelson deployed his Taser gun.

Herminio Espino Espino was handcuffed and placed in a patrol car.

A volunteer firefighter was struck when the fire engine that was struck lurched into him, knocking him into a pool of water being used to fight the fire.

That firefighter was not seriously hurt, but Espino had a large laceration behind his ear and was taken to Putnam County Community Medical Center, then transferred to Shands Medical Center in Gainesville.

A 15-year-old boy who was a passenger riding with Espino was treated at the scene for minor injuries.

According to the arrest report, deputies found eight small baggies believed to be cocaine. Two baggies of marijuana were also found in the back seat of the patrol car after Hermino was moved to the rescue unit.

Deputies contacted the owner of the the SUV and learned Espino did not have permission to be driving the car.

According to the report, Espino will be charged grand theft, possession of marijuana and cocaine with intent to sell, attempting to elude a police officer, resisting arrest, interference of child custody, child neglect, driving under the influence, reckless driving and operating a vehicle without a license.
