First Lady to announce milestone in Jax
Michelle Obama will meet with military families at Mayport next week
First Lady Michelle Obama will visit Naval Station Mayport on Wednesday to meet with military families and announce "a major veterans and military spouse employment milestone for the Obama administration and Joining Forces," according to a Navy news release.
Michelle Obama will also announce new hiring commitments made by the private sector for the coming years, according to the release. The event is scheduled for 1 p.m.
Last year, the First Lady and Jill Biden, wife of Vice President Joe Biden, launched Joining Forces to bring Americans together to recognize, honor and serve the nation's veterans and military families. Over the last year, 2,100 businesses have stepped up to hire and train veterans and military spouses, according to the release.
These companies have renewed their commitment to the military community in support of Joining Forces by sponsoring and participating in hundreds of hiring events held across the country, from Miami to Juneau, Alaska, according to the release. They have also sponsored a number of virtual hiring fairs to connect with transitioning service members stationed in Kuwait and Afghanistan, the release says.
Last August, President Barack Obama announced a series of policies to increase veterans' employment and asked his wife and Jill Biden to lead an effort through Joining Forces to challenge the private sector to hire or train 100,000 veterans and military spouses by the end of 2013. In April, during the one-year anniversary tour of the Joining Forces initiative, the First Lady traveled to the Kansas City Southern Railway Company's facility in Shreveport, La., to announce the 50,000th veteran or military spouse to have been hired.
