JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -

The First Coast Outer Beltway will one day connect Interstate 10 on the Westside with Interstate 95 in St. Johns County.

A couple interchanges are already open, and more are coming.

The Florida House passed a budget committing $240 million to road projects in the area.

One of them is an Argyle Forest Boulevard interchange on the beltway near the Clay County line, at a cost of $123 million. Five more interchanges would eventually be built on the Westside and in Clay County.

People who drive in those areas spoke out about the cost.

"I guess that's the only bonus is that you're going to create some jobs for somebody, but then you're just throwing some money out there," said John Dunlap, who owns a business in Argyle Forest. "So you're creating jobs but spending more. Either way, you're spending a lot of money for nothing."

Dunlap's not alone in feeling that way. Many people in the area are confused as to why the connectors are needed. Many drivers said they take Branan Field Road without any issues.

"I don't think it's necessary," driver Sharon Brand said. "I don't think there's enough traffic to for them to spend that kind of money and do all that they say they want to do."

Some drivers feel it's a good sign for the economy though.

"It does sound like a big price, but if you're going to grow, you have to spend the money, I guess," driver Bill Blacketor said.

The roadway funding bill also contains $28 million for a new off-ramp from I-10 at Hammond Boulevard.

The proposal must now be approved by the state Senate.
