The Florida Supreme Court has heard oral argument in a challenge by tobacco companies to a landmark ruling the justices made six years ago that affected thousands of smokers.

The 2006 decision overturned a $145 billion class action verdict against tobacco companies. But it also allowed class members to file individual suits and upheld the class-action jury's finding that tobacco companies sold dangerous products and hid the hazards of smoking from the public.

A lawyer for three cigarette makers argued Thursday that those finding shouldn't apply to all cigarettes. They are appealing a $2.5 million Tampa jury verdict in the death of smoker Charlotte Douglas.

It is one of the first individual cases to reach the high court since the 2006 ruling.
