Florida online hotel tax ruling will be appealed
A lawyer for 17 Florida counties says they will appeal a court ruling on hotel taxes won by online travel companies.
Bob Nabors on Tuesday said the counties as well as four county tax collectors will take the case to the 1st District Court of Appeal in Tallahassee.
Circuit Judge James Shelfer on Thursday ruled in favor of Expedia and other online companies, also in Tallahassee.
Shelfer says they can be required to pay tourist development taxes only on the amount they pay for hotel rooms rather than the higher price they charge consumers.
Millions of dollars are at stake in the case.
The counties are Leon, Flagler, Lee, Manatee, Pinellas, Polk, Alachua, Nassau, Okaloosa, Seminole, Wakulla, St. Johns, Escambia, Charlotte, Walton, Hillsborough and Pasco.
